Retained Neonatal Reflexes
at Forest Lake Chiropractic

What Are Retained Neonatal Reflexes?

Every baby is born with automatic movements that help it survive and grow, like rooting to feed, grasping fingers, or turning its head. These early reflexes are designed to fade as a child’s brain develops and new movement patterns take over.

But sometimes, these primitive reflexes stick around longer than they should.

When they don’t fade out naturally, they may interfere with your child’s ability to sit still, stay focused, or move easily. These lingering reflexes are called Retained Neonatal Reflexes (RNRs).

How RNR Can Affect Development

As children grow, their nervous systems are meant to shift from these early responses to more refined control. If RNRs remain active, they can disrupt posture, balance, coordination, emotional regulation, and even learning. These effects might show up in subtle ways, like clumsiness, frustration with school tasks, or emotional ups and downs.
Chiropractors with training in RNR assessment can spot signs that certain reflexes may still be present and influencing the brain-body connection.

Support That Encourages Brain-Body Coordination

RNR care at Forest Lake Chiropractic often involves gentle adjustments and easy, specific movements your child can do at home. This combination is designed to encourage the brain to organise and respond more efficiently, helping kids move, learn, and feel better in their own bodies.

Common Signs to Watch For

  • Trips or bumps into things more than usual
  • Struggles with learning or attention
  • Has frequent emotional outbursts
  • Missed or hit developmental milestones late

…it could be worth having them checked for retained reflexes.
